I spent this past weekend appreciating a corner of Massachusetts that I’ve never explored before. Mount Greylock is the commonwealth’s highest peak and the surrounding area is as beautiful as anywhere in New England, which is to say quite impressive!
A friend and I tackled the loop from the Pattison Road AT crossing up over Mt. Prospect, Greylock and Williams and back down to the start. We did the hike over two days, camping overnight at the Sperry Road campsite.
A freak April snowstorm the day before left several inches of snow at the higher elevations, including at the campsite. This made things a little more exciting but nothing unmanageable.
This is a great weekend hike for someone just getting into (or back into) backpacking. Hike the loop counterclockwise so you go down the very steep southern spur of Mt. Prospect rather than up it.
Here’s the AllTrails description of the Greylock loop. The trailhead is at the Appalachian Trail crossing of Pattison Road, in North Adams, MA.
Here are some photos from the trip.
