Information filters are mechanisms that distill vast quantities of information into only the most important—automatically, without effort or cost.
Here are some examples.
The News: Wait to hear essential news directly from friends and family (e.g. via group text) instead of actively following it every day (e.g. on social media).
Email: Liberally archive whole inboxes en masse instead of processing messages one by one. The critical ones will surface on their own.
What to Eat: Eat food that has been recognized as food for a thousand years.
What to Read: Choose canonical books instead of bestsellers; don’t read anything less than 5 years old.
High Quality Goods: Choose used items that have stood the test of time.
Wisdom: Study the great spiritual and philosophical texts; they represent humanity’s collective wisdom accumulated across millennia.
h/t to Tim Ferriss and Derek Sivers here, among many others I’m sure
