We had arrived in Edinburgh for a brief two-night visit earlier in the day. After spending the afternoon exploring, the kids were asleep and I was walking down to the local Tesco for a few breakfast supplies for the next morning.

My plan was to grab the food and then get some work done (I was working remotely most evenings during our trip). But as I approached the store I looked up and saw tiny stick figures of people on the ridge high above the city. It was almost sunset and the weather was a perfect 70 degrees with mostly clear skies.

It occurred to me maybe I should hike up there. No… run up there! Yes, that was it.

I briefly tried to convince myself that I really had a lot of work to do and should “be responsible” and focus on that. But this internal argument actually cemented the running plan. The idea of passing on what could be a remember-forever run in order to do more work sounded ludicrous the moment it popped into my mind.

I was already doing plenty of work, and there is always more work. This would be my only chance at this run, certainly on this trip and quite likely ever.

So of course I went running, and of course it was the right call.

We recently returned from about 3-1/2 weeks exploring England and Scotland.
